The IYT Master of Yachts Unlimited Certificate is a qualification
that indicates that the holder has sufficient knowledge of
celestial navigation, based on air navigation tables and to
globally navigate using a sextant. This course is forty hours
(6 days) of class work and assessment followed by the submission
of sights and proof of a 600 mile rhumb line ocean passage.
This is the ultimate qualification for a sailor of small (less
than 24 m) ocean going sailing boats but just another step
along the long path of qualification in the mega-yacht industry.
The
skills of astro-navigation have been known for centuries but the use of the GPS
and other sophisticated electronic equipment have almost rendered these skills
obsolete. However, if you want to hold unrestricted certificates of competency,
reach the pinnacle of your knowledge and proceed along the path to mega-yacht
competence the course is essential.
After
being taught the skills required and taken in the sights,
the candidate will prepare a submission covering sights, a
passages plan and an ocean passage to be assessed by an IYT
Master of Yachts Unlimited Examiner. Candidates who have demonstrated
the required level of understanding and expertise in the course
syllabus will be awarded the Master of Yachts Unlimited Certificate.
