OFFICER OF THE WATCH (OOW)
OOW 3000t
The OOW modules provide an introduction into the world of radar, ship construction and stability, all types of radio, leadership and advanced sea survival.
Required training for OOW (Yachts) less than 3000gt:
- General Ship Knowledge (GSK)
- Navigation and Radar including ARPA (N&R)
- Advanced Sea Survival
- Human Elements of Leadership and Management at Operational level (HELM)
- MCA approved Efficient Deck Hand (EDH)
- Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS)
- STCW Basic Safety Training
It requires a lot of effort from you the candidate and when you are successful, a professional interview (MCA oral) will complete your OOW safari.

NOTE: All of the requirements for the issue of certificates of competence for the yachting code are contained in the MCA document MSN 1858 which is available on the MCA website. www.MCGA.gov.uk
A PYT course completion certificate is issued to all candidates after the successful completion of modules presented by ourselves.
NAVIGATION, RADAR & ARPA
This module introduces the student to:
- Compass Work
- The Gyro Compass
- Chart work
- Chart Correcting
- Notices to Mariners
- Tides & Tidal Calculations
- International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea
- Buoyage System
- Navigation Aids
- Radar & ARPA.
The module is delivered over a 15 day period.
PSCRB - PROFICIENCY IN SURVIVAL CRAFT AND RESCUE BOATS (OTHER THAN FAST RESCUE BOATS) (Restricted)
This module exposes the student to:
- Emergencies & Emergency Drills.
- Survival Craft.
- Life Saving Appliances.
- First Aid for Survivors.
- Helicopter rescue.
- Distress Signals & Communications.
- Rescue Boats.
- Practical Skills.
- Case Studies.
- Students will be instructed in the techniques & skills necessary to:
- Take charge of a survival craft or rescue boat during & after launch.
- Operate a survival craft engine.
- Manage survivors & survival craft after abandoning ship.
- Use locating devices, including communications & signalling apparatus & pyrotechnics.
- Apply first aid to survivors.
The module is presented over a 3 day period.
Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (Other than fast rescue boats) (Restricted) issued under Regulation VI/2 of STCW 1978 as amended. This note also provides information regarding updating of Advanced Sea Survival and Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (Other than fast rescue boats) (Restricted) certificates.

GENERAL SHIP KNOWLEDGE
This OOW module is divided into 5 sections:
- Ship Construction.
- Chemical & Galvanic Corrosion.
- Seaworthiness & Stability.
- Meteorology.
- Seamanship.
The course duration is 5 days or 30 hours of formal instruction.
HUMAN ELEMENT LEADERSHIP & MANAGEMENT (HELM)
HELM (Operational level)
This course is designed to meet the mandatory requirements for training in the human element, leadership and management at the operational level as set out in Regulations II and III of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping for Seafarers (STCW).
It provides students with awareness and understanding of the key human factors influencing effective resource management.
This module exposes the student to:
